TURMERIC SUMMER SMOOTHIE

A few weeks ago I came across a great turmeric summer smoothie recipe, posted by my friend Madhavi on her blog  and I was excited to try it.

I love this one, so I am happy to share it here with you!

Curcuma also known as Turmeric is nothing new to Eastern cultures, in fact it’s been known as a “healing spice” and used to help anything from sore throats, colds, flus, stomach aches to wound healing, abrasions/skin issues due to it’s antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. It is also quite famous for its anti inflammatory healing properties, helps to purify the blood and liver and also inhibits cancer cell growth and prevents many types of cancer because of its high amount of phytonutrients !!!

You can find turmeric sometimes fresh (we grow it in our garden in Costa Rica), but most common in pulverised form, and I highly recommend to buy it organic.

Here comes the recipe:

First it is recommended to make a paste, which you can use as a base for the shake and store easily in the fridge for about 2 weeks (please use a glass container if available)

INGREDIENTS FOR THE PASTE:

1/4 cup organic turmeric powder

1/2 cup water

place both ingredients into a pot on low heat and warm up, stir and mix for about 2-4 minutes until you have created a nice consistency for a paste.

TURMERIC SMOOTHIE (makes 1 portion):

1 Teaspoon Turmeric paste

1/2 cup almond milk (preferably homemade) or any other milk you like, coconut milk also works great

1 small piece of Ingwer (optional)

1 pinch vanilla

1 pinch pepper (helps to absorb the nutrients)

1 teaspoon agave nectar or other preferred sweetener

1/2 teaspoon organic coconut oil  (helps to dissolve turmeric and absorb the nutrients better)

a hand full of ice cubes

INSTRUCTIONS:

Place all ingredients except for coconut oil into a blender and blend at medium speed. Place ice cubes into your glass and pour the shake on top, add the coconut oil, stir and enjoy 😉

You can also enjoy this with yoghurt or in winter as a warm milk before going to bed!
