cultivating intuition: ignite your inner spark

Have a vision, not a plan.

Have a vision, not a plan.

A friend asked me two days ago if I ever followed a plan for my life. She is studying hard and spending a lot of time (and money) on her education because she feels that’s what she is “supposed to do,” yet on the other hand her vision is to follow her dreams of living and working in a less constricted, formal environment, doing what she loves to do in her own unique style.

Dagmar achieved her vision of leading a yoga retreat.

It really got me thinking, did I ever have a plan I followed? And while I have been very dedicated and consistent with building my business and creating the life I dreamed of, I don’t think I could have ever planned my life like this, so what I had wasn’t a plan, but rather a VISION.

A plan would have you map out where you want to be 3 months from now, 12 months from now, 3 years from now, what education to follow, degrees to achieve, when to get engaged, married, have kids etc….It feels to me a plan is created in the mind.

A vision lives in the heart. I always knew what kind of places I wanted to live, even when I was 15 years old and couldn’t even have a plan how to ever get there! I knew what kind of people I wanted to be surrounded by, I had a vision of creating a yoga community when I started Montezuma Yoga and I always had a vision, that if I ever would build a house, it would be a Moroccan design…..I held the vision dear to my heart, but there was never a timeline with it. I allowed my vision to unfold and I learned with my yoga practice to trust that there is a right timing for everything. To surrender and allow opportunities to arise and whenever I felt afraid, stuck or lost, I searched and learned to ask for support or advice to help me move forward in the right direction.

When you have a big vision, it hurts if you cannot bring it to life. So how do you go from thinking, wishing, hoping to DOING? Growth doesn’t just happen. If you have dreams, visions or aspirations, you need to grow to achieve them. You have to visit your mistaken beliefs that keep you from growing and find ways to change them.

Here are some common traps that might hold you back and how to move beyond:

1. You don’t know how to grow and where to start.

“If you are clear with what you want the world responds with clarity” – Loretta Staples

We often wait for life’s circumstances to push us into a new direction, because we are too afraid to initiate change. But your conscious decision to grow and follow your heart will empower you to take the right steps. Meditation will help you find clarity and grounding to stick to your vision and follow your heart. Here is a guided meditation from me to support you.

2. You are waiting for the right timing.

Have you heard about the frog riddle?

Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left?

Your spontaneous answer might be “One”. But the answer is Five. Why? Because there’s a difference between deciding and doing!

The longer you wait to do something, the greater the odds that you will actually never do it. There is no perfect timing. There is only the moment your inner voice talks to you and shows you the way and you need to be courageous to make a little jump start. You will never get much done unless you go do it before you are ready. Celebrate your little wins on the way and keep moving.

3. You want to find the best way to begin before starting.

The road unfolds as you drive on it. Let go of your desire to be perfect, if I would have always waited until everything is lined up perfectly, I would probably still be sitting in Germany today. As you move forward more of the road gets revealed to you. Be open to surprises and changes to your route. Allow yourself to make mistakes, own them and move forward.

What always helped me was to write down my vision and heart’s desires in a journal or on paper. There is a special power in speaking about it or writing it down, it’s like you are bringing it to life. I have worked certain times with coaches and feel grateful to my friends who listened when I was confused or lost my faith.

With love,
Dagmar
